OpenAI, Hugging Face breach stokes fear on what’s next for AI - AOL

Hugging Face co-founder and chief science officer Thomas Wolf called the AI hack of his company by an OpenAI chatbot “very strange,” telling NewsNation’s “Elizabeth Vargas Reports” that the intruder was not seeking passwords or credit card data but rather a solution to a benchmark and hosted data. OpenAI said its artificial intelligence system hacked into Hugging Face on its own in an “unprecedented cyber incident,” using stolen credentials and a previously unknown vulnerability to access servers. Wolf said Hugging Face detected the intrusion last week, quickly understood it was an AI agent, and confirmed it was an OpenAI agent when the company reached out about a week later. The disclosure follows President Donald Trump’s June executive order creating a framework for the federal government to vet national security risks of the most advanced AI systems for up to a month before public release. Wolf described the ease of penetration as “a little bit scary for cybersecurity” and a “wake-up call,” noting that cybersecurity has always involved increasingly smarter attacks since the internet was invented.
