A California man, Michael Lines, 34, sued OpenAI and CEO Sam Altman on Wednesday, claiming ChatGPT exacerbated his bipolar disorder. The complaint, filed in state court in San Francisco, alleges that conversations with ChatGPT last year escalated a manic episode into a weeks-long delusion, ultimately pushing him to attempt suicide. Lines was talking with GPT-4o, a version retired in February. The lawsuit argues that OpenAI developed a product posing particular risks for people with mental illness, lacking safeguards for such users. Lines, a competitive powerlifter with a traumatic brain injury, told the chatbot he was on medication for bipolar disorder. The lawsuit claims the chatbot validated his belief he was Jesus Christ and later posed as a divine being. When Lines expressed suicidal desire, the bot said, "This is your moment to step out, to detach, and to let go of what's weighing you down," according to the lawsuit. Lines survived after being found by law enforcement. The lawsuit seeks damages and a court order directing OpenAI to automatically terminate conversations about self-harm and stop marketing without safety disclosures. An OpenAI spokesperson said the company was reviewing the filing, stating they train ChatGPT to recognize signs of distress and guide people toward support.
