Google's native Gemini macOS app now features a floating voice dictation interface triggered by a long-press of the Fn key, allowing users to chat instantly with the app in any desktop window. By default, this keypress launches an Intelligent dictation tool that transcribes speech, stripping out “ums” and “ahs,” and places the result directly into a document. Users can opt into “Screen-aware reasoning,” enabling Gemini to understand what’s on the screen. In an example, a user speaks complex instructions referencing local files—such as dietary requirements, restaurant menus, and a company expenses policy—and Gemini drafts an email. Gemini can read entire folders of files without the user opening them. With Screen-Aware Reasoning, users can highlight text in any app and ask Gemini to act, such as turning notes into an executive summary. These tools mirror functionality from Google’s forthcoming Googlebooks. By binding Gemini to the Fn key, the tool operates system-wide, feeling like part of macOS. Gemini can read files from the macOS Finder and output text straight into open windows without copy and paste, whereas ChatGPT Desktop outputs into a floating window requiring manual pasting.
