Georgina DiNardo, a community manager, used ChatGPT to create a half-marathon training plan after deciding to take on the challenge during a quarter-life crisis, as personal trainers were prohibitively expensive. She entered her weight, height, and beginner running level, and the chatbot formulated a schedule over about 2.5 months. The plan began with interval training: in Week 1, she trained in 30-minute sessions three times a week, running for one minute and walking for two; in Week 2, she ran for two minutes and walked for two, incrementally increasing running by one minute per week. At Week 5, ChatGPT instructed a "short run" of 2–2.5 miles, and she ran about 2.3 miles, feeling exhilarated. Two days later, it told her to take a "long run" of 3.5 miles. For the rest of the schedule, ChatGPT alternated short and long runs, increasing length by 0.5–1 mile per week. The instructions were often helpful or harmless, with one notable exception. DiNardo had previously reported on the Pentagon’s use of artificial intelligence, and her biggest takeaway was not to trust AI, though her familiarity made her comfortable using it for a low-stakes scenario. Her first half-marathon ended up going better than expected.
