Consumer and environmental groups are pressing the Louisiana Public Service Commission to slow Entergy Louisiana’s gas plant proposal linked to Meta’s AI data centre in north Louisiana. The proposal is before the commission, which oversees utility decisions, and the central question is whether Entergy should build multiple new gas-fired plants or whether the deal shifts too much risk onto ordinary customers. EarthJustice, the Alliance for Affordable Energy and the Union of Concerned Scientists have raised objections, arguing the public lacks enough information to assess the project’s scale, including details about projected electricity demand, future rates and the number of jobs the data centre may create. Christie Hicks, an attorney with EarthJustice, said gas turbines bring emissions problems including smog-forming nitrogen oxides, fine particulate matter and chemicals such as formaldehyde. Susan Miller, also with EarthJustice, accused Meta of withholding information on the facility’s expected power use and economic benefits. Logan Burke, executive director of the Alliance for Affordable Energy, said the proceeding’s pace leaves little room for meaningful public scrutiny and that the process is being shaped to reveal too little, too late. Paul Arbaje, senior analyst at the Union of Concerned Scientists, said the level of secrecy in the filings makes it impossible to pin down a precise estimate of what Entergy ratepayers may face.
