A GVA TECH survey of 101 corporate legal professionals in Japan found more than 90% use generative AI in their work, with only 7.9% reporting no use. The biggest challenge identified was making use of knowledge from legal cases, cited by 62.4% of respondents. Microsoft's Copilot led tool adoption at 57.4%, followed by Google's Gemini at 35.6% and OpenAI's ChatGPT at 34.7%. The survey, conducted via web questionnaire from May 10 to May 14, 2025, also found that 63.4% of companies use two or more tools in parallel for legal matters, and about 60% of respondents said they were not effectively using accumulated internal knowledge such as past cases and company decision standards. GVA TECH said the findings show that simply introducing generative AI is not sufficient, and organizing data for AI systems has become more important.
