A 27-year-old woman named Beth ended a budding relationship after discovering her date, Matt, had used generative AI to create a doll-like figure of himself for an Instagram story, which she found "cringe on multiple levels." She then suspected that some of his Instagram captions and their initial Hinge chats, including his opener and the choice of a pub for their second date, may have been AI-generated. Beth ghosted him, feeling less attracted to him because she found AI use embarrassing. According to research by Match Group, which owns Tinder, Hinge, and OkCupid, "fifty one percent of women aged 18 to 24 say they would refuse to date someone who uses an AI companion app." Ofcom research indicates that "more than half (54 percent) of UK adults use AI tools," rising to "79 percent among those aged 16-24 and 74 percent for 25-34s."
