A warning and a call for action on AI - from an AI leader

Demis Hassabis of Google Deepmind has written that Artificial General Intelligence “cannot be compared to standard technological breakthroughs, not even ones as consequential as the internet or mobile - it is much more akin to the discovery of electricity or fire.” He highlights that “urgent action” is needed as the technology advances, but warns that “we are locked in an extremely intense, multilayered commercial and geopolitical race” with no action being taken to prepare the world. Hassabis recommends developing a “new Standards Body modelled on a federally overseen public-private partnership or self-regulatory organisation, much like the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA),” responsible for developing assessment protocols and testing in areas relevant to national security. Organisations with ‘Frontier Models’ meeting certain benchmarks would be deemed ‘Frontier Labs’ and encouraged to adopt best practices. The article notes the limitation that this approach is recommended for the US, but suggests countries can take similar steps independently and collaborate globally.
