Google AI Search Expansion and GEO Strategy

Google's AI Search Expansion is shifting SEO focus toward Generative Engine Optimization (GEO), which adds a layer to traditional SEO so AI systems like Google AI Overviews, AI Mode, Gemini, ChatGPT, or Perplexity can cite content inside answers. Google has moved generative AI from experiment to core search, with AI Overviews synthesizing information from multiple web pages into a short answer near the top of results, and AI Mode for longer, multi-step questions. Google states AI Mode and AI Overviews are built on core ranking systems using current search index content. Unlike featured snippets that pull from one page, AI Overviews combine several sources into synthesized responses including definitions, comparisons, and planning steps. Third-party studies report zero-click searches account for a large share of queries, with some estimates near 60 percent, and AI Overviews appear on a growing portion of searches, potentially reducing clickthrough rates on organic results for informational queries. Query behavior is changing, with generative search queries averaging above 20 words compared to roughly 4 words on classic Google Search, requiring content that survives being chunked and summarized by AI models.
