Meta removed a new artificial intelligence model for Instagram on Friday, days after debuting the feature on Tuesday amid immediate public backlash over privacy and copyright concerns, as all users were automatically opted in. The company described its Muse Image AI model as a “creative partner” for generating AI photos. Meta stated, “Our intent was to provide a useful creative tool and to give people control over whether their public content could be referenced in this way. We’ve heard the feedback that this feature missed the mark, so it’s no longer available.” The Friday decision only pauses this model’s use on Instagram, part of a broader rollout of Muse Image on WhatsApp and the Meta AI app. SAG-AFTRA called the model “unacceptable” and shared instructions for turning off automatic settings, stating, “With the dangers of nonconsensual digital replicas well known to all, a feature that encouraged that behavior is unwise. We appreciate its discontinuance.” Public Citizen also approved the removal of the “invasive” feature, saying, “Big Tech wanted to strip away our right to privacy. But the people spoke up, and we won.” Meta previously faced controversy last fall over its AI video generator Sora, which shut down in March after similar complaints about copyright issues and nonconsensual images.
