A Google veteran with seven years of experience was fired after developing a CLI tool that gained 28,000 stars on GitHub. The tool, called Google Workspace CLI, was built by members of Google's DevRel team under Google's official GitHub organization. It dynamically reads Google's Discovery Service at runtime, automatically generates commands, and encapsulates APIs for Gmail, Drive, Calendar, Sheets, Chat, and Admin, with over forty functional modules adapted for AI agents. After the tool became popular, directors and senior executives within Google asked how it was made, but then the legal department questioned "why the Google logo appears in the project's GitHub repository." Following the developer's firing, Google immediately released an official version of the same tool called GWS. The "Father of Lobster" supported the developer, saying, "Fortunately, Google can't fire me." Google veteran Addy Osmani, a director of Google Cloud AI with 14 years at the company, had promoted the tool on March 5, a post later called "the tweet that got me fired" by the developer. Google also faced a series of talent departures: two Nobel laureates left within two days, and two core developers of Gemini jumped ship.
