Former OpenAI executive Fidji Simo, who left her role as CEO of AGI deployment after a seven-year battle with Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome (POTS), said she created a company, ChronicleBio, to use AI to tackle chronic diseases. In her first interview since leaving OpenAI, where she reported directly to CEO Sam Altman, Simo said she is “physically the worst I’ve ever been.” There is no cure for POTS, which causes dizziness, fatigue, brain fog, and headaches. Simo called chronic conditions “a real epidemic,” citing “hundreds of billions in lost productivity.” ChronicleBio, co-founded with Rohit Gupta and Rishi Reddy, has performed 890 blood draws from 709 patients in Utah, Arizona, Texas, and India, and has over 3,500 tubes of blood in its biobank. The company has extracted 153 terabytes of data from the blood—three times the 45 terabytes GPT-3.5, a 2022 OpenAI model, was trained on—and has raised $15 million to date. On Aug. 11, ChronicleBio will launch a sign-up link for mobile phlebotomy trucks to visit homes of people with certain chronic diseases, offering an in-depth report free for the first 250 people. Simo continues to advise OpenAI and remains in a Slack channel with leadership, including Altman and Greg Brockman, whose wife has POTS.
