US President Donald Trump on Saturday criticized opponents of artificial intelligence and data centers, saying he would not allow the industry’s “destruction” and announcing a new government “AI Force.” Writing on Truth Social, Trump said liberals want the “decimation, or destruction, of AI,” adding, “I, as President of the United States, will not stand by and let this happen.” He said the United States “will not in any way hinder or stifle the Growth of this incredible Industry,” and that he was creating an “AI Force” tasked with “looking for BAD” actors, with an AI coordinator or “Czar” to be announced soon. The defense came as polls show Americans largely oppose energy-guzzling data centers in their communities, and as Trump’s approval rating is low amid the war against Iran and inflation, with surveys suggesting Republicans could lose the House and perhaps the Senate in November’s midterm elections. Trump has dismissed safety warnings, including from industry leaders, as a “hoax,” said the U.S. could not afford to lose a technological race with China, and called for a “STRONG AND SMART (High IQ!) PRESIDENT.” He also posted a poll offering three alternatives to the term artificial intelligence: superior intelligence, extreme intelligence and supreme intelligence.
