A mum says ChatGPT prompted her to return to her GP after her holiday tan turned unusually dark, before she was diagnosed with a life-threatening condition. Poppy Guy, a 29-year-old teaching assistant from Fowey, Cornwall, was on holiday in Malaga, Spain, with her family when she noticed her skin had become much darker than normal. She had also been vomiting daily, struggling with shortness of breath, and feeling constantly light-headed. Doctors had previously attributed her symptoms to anxiety. After describing her symptoms to ChatGPT, Poppy says Addison’s disease was suggested as a possible cause. She returned to her GP with her concerns and was urgently referred to hospital. A week later, Poppy collapsed at home and was rushed to hospital suffering an adrenal crisis, a life-threatening complication of Addison’s disease. Doctors later confirmed she had the rare condition, which affects the adrenal glands. Poppy said she first started experiencing nausea and sickness in July 2025 and later noticed dark pigmentation on her arms. She visited her GP several times over the following months and was prescribed medication for anxiety, but her symptoms continued to worsen. She said: "I asked ChatGPT about my symptoms and Addison’s disease was one of the options there." The doctor sent an urgent referral, and she now takes 11 tablets a day.
