Amber Roberts, Staff Technical Marketing Manager at Databricks, said productivity is tied to a team's actual KPIs, which differ by team, and pushed back on the idea that there is one right KPI to swap in, noting that engineering productivity and marketing productivity are not the same and should not be measured the same way. She said she is skeptical of headlines that go all in on "this is the wrong way to think about it," adding that even people on the same team can have different priorities for what they want out of AI depending on their own expertise. On the AI ROI gap, Roberts said the people buying AI and the people using it day to day are often different people, and buyers do not want to be late to the game, with their job depending on staying at the cutting edge of technology even if they are not the ones implementing it. She said that if buyers see competitors buying and deploying AI, they will want to make a deal happen, and that over six months to a few years organizations start to see whether it actually built ROI and whether it was worth what was spent. She said that is the phase a lot of organizations are in right now: looking at what they bought, rolling it out broadly, and figuring out which use cases it is effective for, and that a lot of it is trial and error, but that trial and error is still better than being six months behind the competition.
