The Slovene language has obtained its own generative large language model, GaMS, developed using high-quality training data from a citizen science campaign on the povejmo.si platform and organisations including the National and University Library of Slovenia, media house Dnevnik, and the Slovenian Press Agency. The technical development took place in three key stages: pre-training, fine-tuning, and evaluation, building on Google’s open-source Gemma 2 and Gemma 3 models. GaMS represents an important step towards reducing Slovenia’s dependence on foreign corporations in language technologies. The model is available as a chatbot on the povejmo.si platform and as an open-source model on Hugging Face. Companies Better, Semantika, Špica, and XLAB adapted GaMS for industrial and business solutions, with Semantika adapting it for creating presentation materials for museums and advanced interactive museum applications based on GalisOnline, and Špica developing a computationally efficient version for integration into advanced industrial speech.
