A WhatsApp chain letter currently circulating falsely claims that Meta's AI will soon have access to private chats, but fact-checkers and data protection experts have given the all-clear. The central claim of the chain letter is false, as private WhatsApp chats remain protected by end-to-end encryption and cannot be automatically read by Meta or an AI. The "Enhanced Chat Privacy" feature does exist, but it is not intended to prevent alleged AI monitoring; instead, it restricts functions like chat exports and automatic media storage, and all users can activate it themselves. The AI only processes content actively made available to it, such as when users address the chatbot directly. Similar warnings were already circulating in the summer of 2025.
