A survey commissioned by Omnisend with Cint polled 4,363 consumers last August in the United States, United Kingdom, Canada and Australia on holiday shopping intent. Only about one-third of U.S. consumers plan to use AI for shopping needs, at 34 percent, the lowest among the markets surveyed, compared to the U.K. (36 percent), Canada (39 percent), and Australia (40 percent). Among U.S.-based AI users, Gemini has overtaken ChatGPT, with 53 percent planning to use Google’s AI platform compared with 46 percent for OpenAI’s chatbot; Microsoft Copilot followed at 18 percent. Omnisend’s Marty Bauer said Gemini’s rise means retailers can’t optimize for ChatGPT alone and need visibility wherever AI search sends shoppers, while noting shoppers’ concerns about AI information credibility and the importance of genuine reviews. Consumers in the U.K., Canada and Australia said they rely on ChatGPT for shopping research. In the U.S., Walmart topped Amazon as preferred online marketplace, 67 percent compared to 62 percent, followed by Temu at 21 percent and Shein at 15 percent; Amazon was preferred in the other countries. Most shoppers plan to purchase gifts for family and friends, but one-third of Americans, especially those under 35, will also buy presents for themselves. Clothing is their first choice, sharing the spot with gift cards.
