ChatGPT has started refusing requests to write in a given author's style, as OpenAI fights several ongoing copyright infringement lawsuits that accuse it of training its AI on writers' work without their permission. Ars Technica tested the concern raised by a Reddit poster on r/WritingWithAI who complained he was unable to get the AI to follow prompts like "rewrite in the literary style of 'author here' with abundant dialogue and detail avoiding staccato prose." Ars Technica tested prompts for writing in the style of both living and deceased authors but was not successful; its prompt for ChatGPT to write like Stephen King was denied, and the chatbot instead offered a response that "captures a similar feeling." Yahoo Tech tested prompts and received similar replies; in response to a request to write a summer romance in the style of Christina Lauren, ChatGPT said it could write an original romance that captured the "general qualities" of Lauren's work "without closely imitating their distinctive voice or specific creative expression." It gave a similar reply to a prompt for a haunted house story in the style of Grady Hendrix. OpenAI did not reply to a request for comment Tuesday. The company has argued that its use of published materials is considered fair use under U.S. copyright law.
