ASI Alliance CEO Ben Goertzel has countered OpenAI CEO Sam Altman’s argument that DRAM sitting idle in home computers is a poor use of a scarce resource. In an interview on the Cheeky Pint podcast, hosted by Stripe co-founder John Collison, Altman said local inference and people having DRAM in home computers is “quite terrible,” arguing that from a global allocation perspective it is bad for the world’s limited DRAM supply to sit in computers used 5% of the time, and that “you want maximum utilization in the cloud.” The episode aired on Oct. 29. Goertzel agreed idle memory is a waste but said it does not all have to go to large server farms, arguing people should be able to rent out spare memory and processing power from their laptops through decentralized networks and earn tokens. He pointed to NuNet, incubated in 2018 inside SingularityNET, which he said went live in March, and to ASI:Chain, which has yet to reach mainnet. Cointelegraph previously reported NuNet uses idle CPU and GPU power and noted it is easier and cheaper to run large models using centralized equipment; Goertzel has acknowledged the alliance is “quite far from having as much hardware as OpenAI or Google.”
