On August 9, North Korea’s Rodong Sinmun reported that information technology (IT) encompasses information equipment manufacturing technology, programming technology, information service technology, and information and communications technology. The newspaper said recent IT education has increasingly focused on artificial intelligence and foundational technologies including big data technology, data science, network security technology, cloud computing technology, Internet of Things (IoT) technology, bioinformatics, and project management technology. Rodong Sinmun emphasized strengthening instruction in computational thinking, the cognitive process of breaking complex problems into smaller subproblems. It noted that due to rapid advances in IT, especially generative AI and cloud computing, computers now independently generate text, video content, and programs, leading many people—particularly those aged 17 to 25 globally—to believe AI “only provides the correct answers” and avoid computational thinking. The newspaper argued that cutting-edge technologies are realized through complex computational processes and still have unresolved accuracy issues, calling for stronger computational thinking education. It also said practical training should be expanded: schools previously conducted 4–5 weeks of practical training, but students are now dispatched to companies or scientific research institutions for 20–25 weeks to design and implement complex programs, developing abilities in algorithm and data structure design, programming, and project management. This allows students to begin projects immediately after graduation without separate training.
