A reinforcement-learning-based charging approach from Sweden’s Chalmers University of Technology suggests artificial intelligence can enable faster EV charging while significantly extending battery life. The study describes a battery-management system that uses reinforcement learning to adjust charging current throughout the fast-charging process, continuously analyzing data and adapting the strategy to each battery’s real-time state. The method reportedly achieves a substantial improvement by extending battery life by about 703 full-charge cycles, roughly a 22.9% increase over standard approaches. If translated to real-world use, range could increase by about 70,000 miles at the low end and exceed 100,000 miles for higher-life packs. Tests were conducted on models and simulations rather than on commercial packs in everyday operation. A key finding is that longer battery life does not necessarily require longer charging times; the method preserves fast charging capability while reducing degradation.
