Vitalik Buterin Says AI Debate Depends on Whether ASI Arrives Soon

Vitalik Buterin said the debate over artificial intelligence comes down to whether artificial superintelligence (ASI) will arrive soon. In a post on X, Buterin noted supporters of the “AI 2040” view believe superintelligence could emerge by 2040 unless development is slowed, while others see AI as just another major technology and oppose slowing development. Buterin said he does not fully agree with either camp; if ASI becomes likely within the next decade, stronger intervention would make more sense, but he is not ready to take either extreme position. He continues to support his “d/acc” philosophy focusing on defensive technologies. Rather than an immediate pause, Buterin suggested pre-agreed warning signs that would justify slowing progress, such as widespread AI-driven job losses or advanced autonomous weapons. He also said social media platforms owned by people like Elon Musk could help host broader public discussions on AI governance. Community member Harry Hawk argued that fears of AI taking over are exaggerated, comparing it to the Industrial Revolution. Buterin replied that believing AI will continue creating jobs is incoherent.
