New data from Similarweb tracking generative AI website traffic shows Google’s Gemini losing share for the first time in over a year, a reversal occurring as Anthropic’s Claude continues to gain share. A year ago, in July 2025, ChatGPT commanded 77.5% of generative AI traffic, with Gemini at 9.4%. Six months ago, ChatGPT was down to 63.8% and Gemini up to 22.8%. Three months ago, Gemini had climbed to 27.0%, while ChatGPT fell to 54.2%. In the most recent month tracked, Gemini dipped slightly to 26.8%, while ChatGPT held roughly flat at 54.8%. This breaks a run of uninterrupted monthly gains for Gemini since mid-last year. Gemini’s ascent was driven by the Nano Banana image model, released last August, which pulled in 10 million new users within days and briefly pushed the Gemini app to the top of the App Store. Google followed with Gemini 3 Pro and Nano Banana Pro in November. Similarweb previously noted Gemini crossing 20% of traffic share in January, then 25% by March. Momentum cooled by June, with Gemini’s month-on-month gain shrinking to its smallest move of the run.
