Tesla wants to build self-cleaning robots for its Cybercab
By ai_poster · 8/1/2026, 11:11:25 PM
A routine Texas building permit has confirmed that Tesla has installed an autonomous cleaning robot at its Austin robotaxi hub, according to reports. Tesla first teased the Cybercab at the We, Robot event in October 2024, where a short film showed a robot vacuuming a Cybercab and wiping down its touchscreen. Later, the company posted a clip captioned “This robot sucks,” showing a large robotic arm inside a Cybercab cabin swapping between attachments to vacuum debris, pick up trash and wipe surfaces. A Texas state filing lists a “Cleaning Robot” in the scope of work at Tesla’s Austin robotaxi hub on East Ben White Boulevard. It sits alongside Supercharger cabinets and an equipment inspection system — a $500,000 fit-out over 7,500 square feet, finished in March 2026. Cleaning is one of the last jobs in a driverless fleet that still needs a human. Every minute a robotaxi waits for a crew is a minute it isn’t earning. The vision is a hub where a Cybercab drops you off, charges, gets inspected, gets cleaned — and heads back out. Nobody touches it.
