SK Group chairman Chey Tae-won met with Korean reporters in New York on the 10th, local time, the day SK hynix made a successful debut on the Nasdaq. Chey stressed that demand for memory semiconductors, including SK hynix's high-bandwidth memory (HBM), has continued to outpace supply as global big tech companies expand investment in AI data centers. He stated, "The gap between supply and demand is very large right now," citing long lead times to build plants and produce wafers, and many infrastructure bottlenecks. Chey emphasized, "As AI technology becomes more sophisticated, memory demand will inevitably continue on an upward trend for a considerable period." He explained, "AI is still only at the level of a four- or five-year-old child," adding that reaching artificial general intelligence (AGI) will require "an unimaginable amount of data training and application execution." He noted that demand for HBM and other memory products is already rising exponentially, and that customers are asking, "How can we get more memory? How will you increase production?" Chey expressed willingness to expand production facilities, saying, "If the conditions are right, there is no reason we cannot do it" regarding building memory semiconductor plants in the United States.
