A Tesla Model 3 driven by Michael Butler crashed into a brick home in Houston, Texas, around 8 PM, killing 76-year-old Martha Avila, who was airlifted to a hospital and pronounced dead. Butler told authorities the vehicle was in Full Self-Driving (FSD) mode, and investigators found no evidence of a mechanical malfunction, though the investigation is not complete. Tesla Vice President Ashok Elluswamy stated the driver “manually overridden” the autopilot by pressing the accelerator to 100% while driving at 73 miles per hour. Elon Musk tweeted that FSD drives slowly through neighborhood streets and called this a high-speed crash. Senator Edward Markey called on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration to require Tesla to release comprehensive safety data on self-driving vehicles.
