Google is rolling out a giant Gemini AI bar at the bottom of the screen in Google Docs for some users, a feature first noticed in April. Users can hide this bar by clicking Gemini in the menu bar, hovering over Bottom bar preferences, and selecting Turn off. To disable AI features in Google Docs entirely, personal account users can change a setting in Gmail: click the gear in the top right corner, select See all settings, scroll to the Smart features option in the General tab, and uncheck it. This disables other AI-powered features in Gmail, including grammar suggestions, autocorrect, smart compose, smart reply, and nudges, as well as Gmail’s spellcheck, though browser spellcheck continues to work. For company-issued Google Workspace accounts, only the administrator can decide which AI features appear, so individual users cannot turn them off on their own. An alternative method that seems to work for everyone is installing a Chrome extension.
