Chinese President Xi Jinping is set to visit the United States from September 23 to 25 for high-level talks with President Donald Trump at Trump’s invitation, Beijing said. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun said the leaders will discuss China-U.S. relations, trade, artificial intelligence, Taiwan, and broader international issues, with an “in-depth exchange” on major bilateral issues and global peace and development. Guo said both nations should use high-level diplomacy to provide “strategic guidance,” calling the reciprocal exchange of presidential visits within a six-month period a “historic milestone,” and said Beijing is ready to build a “constructive relationship of strategic stability,” strengthen dialogue and cooperation, manage differences, and contribute to global peace, stability, and prosperity. The summit follows preparatory economic and trade talks in New York, where AI featured prominently. U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent called the discussions “very successful” and said Washington proposed a U.S.-China AI dialogue including a notification mechanism for critical incidents posing potential national security risks. Zhou Mi of the Chinese Academy of International Trade and Economic Cooperation told the Global Times the talks show commitment to existing agreements and translating presidential consensus into concrete policy actions. The efforts coincide with the upcoming November expiration of the tariff truce reached by Trump and Xi in Busan in 2025.
