Open-source code host Codeberg voted 358–144 on July 27, 2026, to ban projects built primarily with generative AI tools, a decision developer Theo called more restrictive than Apple's App Store. The policy prohibits "vibe-coded projects," autonomous AI agent software, and any repository "heavily tied to the LLM ecosystem," including projects "written and maintained with heavy use of LLMs." Theo, a former donor who had recommended Codeberg as a GitHub alternative, argued the ban undermines free-software principles and penalizes legitimate AI-assisted development. He contrasted Codeberg's stance with Linus Torvalds' recent endorsement of AI as a practical tool for maintainers, warning the policy will drive developers toward proprietary platforms or self-hosted alternatives. With enforcement relying on community complaints rather than automated scanning, Theo said the ban creates a "vicious cycle" of suspicion that erodes trust in open-source collaboration. Codeberg's official blog post, titled "Protecting our open-source commons from LLMs," cited resource drain from ghost projects as justification.
