Greek engineer and inventor Haris Ioannou, who leads product work for Google Cloud's Gemini Audio portfolio, discussed the rise of voice as a major AI interface and the importance of human judgement in an interview on the Astikes Kliseis series hosted by Nikos Skoufos. At age 14, inspired by his grandmother's difficulty gripping objects, he began developing an exoskeleton glove, which became one of 15 finalists in the 2013 Google Science Fair. Ioannou later studied electrical and computer engineering and earned a master's degree at Columbia Engineering. He described his childhood dyslexia as "a gift" and taught himself English and coding. He now leads a team of about 80 people working on Gemini's voice capabilities across 135 languages and dialects. The discussion examined why voice is emerging as AI's next major interface, why human judgement remains irreplaceable, and how smaller AI companies can challenge established groups, including that "competing with Google is not impossible" if a company starts in an area Google has not prioritised. The conversation also covered reGeneration, the Greek employment initiative of which Ioannou was a founding member, and the challenge of assembling a high-level international technology team.
