Starting in August, students at the University of Colorado Boulder will be required to complete an AI training module before they are allowed to access CU’s version of ChatGPT. The university is planning to roll out CU-controlled access to ChatGPT Edu for students across all campuses in mid-August. The Artificial Intelligence Strategic Steering Committee is overseeing a working group creating the required training module. “This will ensure our community has the tools and understanding needed to use AI effectively and responsibly,” Provost Ann Stevens said in a release. The university initially planned to roll out ChatGPT services to everyone in March after entering into a $2.1 million contract with OpenAI, but delayed the rollout after concerns about privacy, academic misuse and cost. CU Boulder also announced on Tuesday that it is expanding its Artificial Intelligence Strategic Steering Committee, which was created in 2024. There are eight members of the committee. The committee will charge several AI subcommittees with specific tasks in research, administrative operations, teaching, learning and student success. The university has created an updated charge that expands the committee’s role as CU Boulder’s central coordinating body for AI.
