NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang posted a document on X titled 'Open Weights and American AI Leadership', stating that "open models strengthen safety and cybersecurity, accelerate innovation and diffusion, and enable sovereignty." The document noted that software developed by the open-source community supports most of the internet and is used by the world’s largest technology companies, the US military and federal agencies. It argued that "our AI leadership will be judged not by one frontier AI model, but by whether the United States builds a strong, open ecosystem that diffuses into every sector." Open-weight models allow anyone to download, inspect, modify, and run models on their own infrastructure, enabling organizations to match the right model to the right job at the right cost. The document warned that "relying solely on closed models is not inherently safe," as they can be breached or misused, while open-weight models allow researchers to identify vulnerabilities and develop safeguards. It concluded that "America wins the AI era by diffusing it into the workflows of factories, hospitals, farms, classrooms and main street businesses."
