Huawei’s Zhu Zhaosheng: Ascend Past Ecosystem Inflection With Five-Di…

At HUAWEI CONNECT 2026 in Shanghai, Zhu Zhaosheng, Huawei’s Chief Strategy Officer for Computing, said Ascend has passed a key ecosystem inflection and laid out a five-dimension agentic computing path for SuperPoDs and SuperClusters. The speech focused on developer primitives including ThinkPro process APIs, an open PTO instruction set, Ascend 950 SIMD plus SIMT programming, and shared community access to 10k-NPU-scale compute for partners and independent developers. Zhu said agentic workloads stretch time to first token, interconnect bandwidth, and memory footprints. The five shifts cover single-server to SuperPoD development with composable APIs, including memory-semantic load/store across physical nodes and message-semantic URMA asynchronous transfers; process-centric runtimes to ThinkPro-based agent development, with openEuler treating ThinkProcess as the atomic unit of thinking, execution, exploration, and evolution; SIMD-only operator styles to homogeneous SIMD plus SIMT and Regbase programming on Ascend 950; HiF8 toward low-precision HiF4; and manual operator coding toward agent-assisted generation, adaptation, precision tuning, and industrial deployment. Ascend’s CANN open-source community now exceeds 5,200 monthly active users and has ranked among China’s most active open-source communities since June, with non-Huawei contributors outnumbering Huawei developers and more than 30,000 lines of code merged daily.
