Social media users shared what appeared to be a newspaper clipping about a 46-year-old theft case at a jewellery shop in Madhya Pradesh's Ujjain, claiming the shop owner recognised the woman after she shared an old photo on Facebook following the viral retro photo trend in which users ask ChatGPT to create 1980's-style images, and reported her to the police. News organisations Hindustan Times, Mid Day Gujarati, News18 Telugu, and Zee Telugu also shared reports related to this claim. The story is fabricated and the images are AI-generated. Reports about the incident were attributed to social media, not concrete sources, and the clipping carried no information about the victim, the alleged thief, any police official, date, or specific details. Ujjain's Superintendent of Police Pradeep Sharma was contacted, with no response yet. Sightengine gave the image a 99 percent likelihood of being AI-generated, Isitai showed high confidence (99 percent), and OpenAI's Verify confirmed the image was made using OpenAI's tools. A fabricated story and an AI-generated image have gone viral with a false claim about a woman being caught for theft 46 years after it took place.
