Andrej Karpathy, a Slovak-Canadian computer scientist and AI researcher, is a founding member of OpenAI, Tesla’s former head of AI, and now part of Anthropic’s pre-training team. Born on October 23, 1986, in Bratislava, then Czechoslovakia, he is 39 years old as of 2026. His family moved to Toronto, Canada when he was around 15. He earned a Bachelor’s degree in computer science and physics from the University of Toronto in 2009, a Master’s degree from the University of British Columbia in 2011, and a PhD in computer science from Stanford University in 2015, advised by Fei-Fei Li. He was a founding researcher at OpenAI from 2015 to 2017, became Tesla’s Director of AI in 2017, and left in 2022. He returned to OpenAI in early 2023, contributing to GPT-4, before leaving in July 2024 to start Eureka Labs, an AI-native education company. In May 2026, he joined Anthropic to lead a new pre-training research group. He is known for his YouTube lectures, uncanny AI predictions, and for creating the term ‘vibe coding’.
