Some Claude users' shareable apps, tools, and visualizations are appearing in Google search results, raising questions about how public AI-generated content is handled by search engines. Over the weekend, users on Reddit and X warned they could easily use Google to find Claude artifacts—apps, documents, spreadsheets, web pages and other files created with Claude. As of Monday afternoon, Axios could still find publicly shared Claude artifacts indexed on Google, but not Claude conversations. Claude conversations and artifacts are private by default, but users can choose to generate a public link to share either one. An Anthropic spokesperson said the company does not "share chat directories or sitemaps with search engines like Google," adding that "these shareable links are not guessable or discoverable unless people choose to share them themselves" and that "when someone shares a conversation, they are making that content publicly accessible." Anthropic added that chats and artifacts are only searchable on third-party search engines after being shared somewhere a search engine can see, such as a discussion forum or social media. Indexed Claude artifacts viewed by Axios included an apparent plan opposing the dissolution of a Miami city agency, a document about changes to a university's academic calendar, business plans, infrastructure diagrams, and planning documents for a clinical trial.
