Google has quietly shelved its “Me Meme” feature, an AI-powered tool inside Google Photos that allowed users to insert their own likeness into classic memes, just a few months after it was rolled out. According to Android Authority, Google has deleted the Google Photos support page and social media announcements for Me Meme, which might have been dumped as far back as May since it hasn’t been mentioned on Google Photos’ creations page since late spring. No announcement has been made on why Me Meme was jettisoned, but it is likely because of a lack of users. This follows a trend of similar AI apps failing, including OpenAI’s video generator Sora, which was officially canned in March after shedding hundreds of thousands of users despite an estimated $1 million per day in spending. Separately, Meta botched the launch of its AI model Muse Image, which sparked a privacy backlash and criticism from SAG-AFTRA after announcing it could create AI images of any user with a public profile on Instagram by tagging their account. Meta removed the feature, stating, “We’ve removed this feature while we take time to listen to feedback and evaluate the approach.”
