The ChatGPT browser is dead after less than a year

OpenAI has confirmed it is shutting down ChatGPT Atlas, an AI-powered browser launched in October, with the service ending on 9 August. The company is shifting focus to ChatGPT Work, a new productivity platform that integrates many of Atlas’ features into the main ChatGPT experience. OpenAI stated that lessons from early Atlas users directly shaped the new platform, with James Sun noting that capabilities were built on what was learned from those users. Rather than maintaining a separate browser, OpenAI has integrated browser-based AI tools into the desktop ChatGPT app and introduced a cloud browser as part of ChatGPT Work. The decision follows reports of OpenAI streamlining its product lineup to better compete with rivals such as Anthropic. Atlas is not the only casualty; OpenAI has also shut down its standalone Sora video generation app and paused plans for a dedicated ChatGPT “adult mode”.
