Indian IT companies are increasingly targeting smaller, short-cycle projects to maintain profit margins as global clients delay large, multi-year spending, aiming to capture emerging AI-related budgets and improve revenue predictability. Both large and mid-sized firms are pursuing projects in the $1 million to $20 million range. HCL Technologies recently added 22 new clients in the $1-10 million category and six clients in the $10-20 million bracket, while Coforge reported adding 129 clients across these smaller segments in the most recent quarter. Artificial Intelligence is a primary driver behind this change, as clients test with discovery engagements and specific AI implementation modules rather than signing massive, traditional outsourcing contracts. Smaller, outcome-based engagements can offer better profit margins and more predictable revenue, but require a strong sales engine and operational efficiency to manage increased administrative workload. Industry analysts note the market has a barbell-shaped structure, with high demand for quick, smaller AI-focused projects at one end and long-term managed operations at the other. The key monitorable for shareholders will be the conversion rate of pilot projects into larger, long-term contracts, and investors should track how well companies manage operational costs.
