Microsoft is reducing its reliance on OpenAI and plans to replace OpenAI's technology with its own in-house AI image generation model in core products such as PowerPoint and Bing, according to Zhitong Finance APP. Mustafa Suleyman, head of Microsoft’s AI business, stated that compared to OpenAI’s models, Microsoft’s in-house models operate faster, incur lower costs, deliver higher-quality outputs, and enhance user retention. In PowerPoint, the operating cost of Microsoft’s proprietary Microsoft AI (MAI) model has decreased by approximately 85% compared to previous levels. Microsoft currently retains free access to OpenAI’s large models under their long-term partnership agreement but bears substantial infrastructure costs. Suleyman noted that image generation is among the most commonly used AI features by new users in office software. Microsoft also announced that businesses including T-Mobile US and UK-based EasyJet have begun deploying Microsoft’s newly launched AI voice generation model in customer service call centers. Previous media reports indicated Microsoft has started progressively replacing OpenAI’s and Anthropic’s text generation models with its own in-house models across multiple Office applications. Microsoft stated its MAI model now performs on par with OpenAI’s latest GPT-5.6 model on common tasks in Excel. Suleyman added that the MAI model is integrated into more than half of Microsoft’s products and is being tested across all Microsoft offerings.
