The University of Johannesburg (UJ) has enhanced its AI-powered chatbot, MoUJi, with advanced Large Language Model (LLM) technology, enabling prospective and current students to engage naturally in multiple South African languages, such as isiZulu, Afrikaans and Sesotho. The enhancement aims to make student support more accessible, personalised and available around the clock. Students can ask MoUJi in their preferred language to calculate an Admission Point Score (APS), check admission requirements, apply for admission, register for classes or seek financial aid information, receiving immediate, context-aware responses. Professor Bettine van Vuuren, Registrar at UJ, said the enhancement reflects the University’s commitment to ensuring technology serves people responsibly, expanding opportunity rather than creating new barriers. Every year, South African universities receive hundreds of thousands of applications, generating enormous demand for information on qualifications, admission requirements, registration, financial aid and accommodation. The enhanced MoUJi provides immediate responses to routine enquiries, allowing University staff to focus on more complex interactions.
