OpenAI is offering robotics engineers up to half a million dollars a year in base salaries as it builds out its robotics efforts, with 27 robotics jobs listed on its careers page, up from 11 in May, spanning hardware, software, data collection, and prototyping, according to Business Insider's review. Publicly advertised base salaries range from $177,000 to half a million dollars a year, before equity. The listings show OpenAI is hiring people to design and build hardware, collect data needed to train robots, and test them, including actuator design engineers, software, firmware, and machine-learning engineers, a lab technician, and a lawyer dedicated to the robotics team. Another role would oversee OpenAI's "data collection facilities." The highest-paid opening is for a machine-learning engineer working on distributed data systems, listing a base salary of up to $500,000. Cornell professor Guy Hoffman, who reviewed all 27 postings, said OpenAI appears to be assembling a "custom robot design team." The postings cite "unlocking general-purpose robotics and pushing towards AGI-level intelligence" and a long-term vision of "everyone having a personal robot doing anything they need." CEO Sam Altman said, "We will definitely do a humanoid," adding, "We will do other form factors as well." The robotics team is led by Aditya Ramesh. OpenAI declined to comment.
