Inside HD Hyundai Electric’s AI power push
By ai_poster · 6/29/2026, 5:28:46 AM
HD Hyundai Electric’s new Cheongju Power Distribution Campus in Cheongju, North Chungcheong Province, uses robotics and autonomous carriers to produce low- and medium-voltage circuit breakers, shifting focus to distribution equipment for AI data centers. During a media tour on Thursday, workers monitored real-time screens tracking energy use, material flows, warehouse inventory and production output. Lee Chang-ho, senior executive vice president leading the power distribution division, said during a press conference that “as power demand from AI data centers is rising globally, we are also feeling firsthand that demand for distribution equipment is increasing sharply worldwide.” The facility, built on an 85,420-square meter site, began operations after its completion in November, with the company investing 116.1 billion won ($75.6 million). It consolidates circuit breaker operations from Anseong, Gyeonggi Province, design functions from Ulsan and warehouse operations from Busan. The Anseong factory has been shuttered, and HD Hyundai Electric is reviewing whether to relocate remaining power distribution operations from Ulsan to Cheongju. The plant can produce more than 50,000 types of low-and medium-voltage circuit breakers.
