Microsoft will anchor its AI assistant Copilot in the classic Outlook for Windows starting in August 2026, adding a dedicated button directly into the email program’s user interface. The new access point will sit above the actual workspace and capture the context of open content, aiming to make artificial intelligence an integral part of the daily work interface. Microsoft is aligning the design with other Office applications such as Word, Excel, or PowerPoint, where similar access already exists, to standardize operation and help users find generative text functions more quickly. According to Microsoft’s current roadmap, the system should directly suggest relevant actions, keeping the workflow uninterrupted by anchoring the tool as a connected system rather than distributing touch points. One noted disadvantage is the possible loss of screen space due to new buttons. Previous design choices have drawn criticism, as other programs introduced a floating button in the bottom right corner that overlaid documents, which many users found annoying. Microsoft later reacted by offering options, allowing users to choose different displays in settings or switch off Copilot completely. It is still unclear whether Outlook will offer similar customization options, and the exact placement of the new access in the classic email client is not conclusively clarified, though it is likely to be integrated into the top menu bar. Whether existing AI functions for direct message writing will be adapted or remain in their current form also remains to be seen.
