The Indonesian Health Ministry (Kemenkes) is accelerating healthcare transformation by developing robotic surgery technology, including procuring 40 surgical robotic units for government hospitals and building an Artificial Intelligence (AI) ecosystem. Health Minister Budi G. Sadikin underscored this commitment at Bunda Hospital in Jakarta, celebrating nearly 1,000 robotic surgical procedures and launching a collaboration between Kemenkes, Bunda Hospital, and Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB). Budi stated that robotics is one of the Ministry’s three priority health technologies, alongside AI and biotechnology, noting the technology offers superior quality of care, more precise surgeries, reduced pain, and shorter recovery times. He acknowledged Indonesia’s robotic surgery utilization lags behind Singapore, Thailand, Malaysia, and Vietnam, prompting aggressive government action. A primary initiative is forming a Ministry Robotics Committee to chart technology development, from requirements and service standards to cost-efficient public access strategies. The Ministry is also evaluating a payment scheme through the Healthcare and Social Security Agency (BPJS Kesehatan) to include robotic surgery in the national financing system. To lay groundwork, Kemenkes is strengthening minimally invasive services through a national laparoscopic surgery training program for surgeons across 514 regencies and municipalities, targeting procedures like hernias, appendicitis, gallbladders, and digestive interventions.
