The Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Niger Delta Power Holding Company (NDPHC), Jennifer Adighije, stated that Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) are transforming Nigeria’s power sector by improving operations across NDPHC’s generation plants. She disclosed this in a statement in Lagos yesterday after her engagement with the Nigerian Economic Summit Group (NESG). Adighije said digital technologies had enhanced efficiency, reliability and performance, noting that NDPHC has introduced AI-powered predictive maintenance systems to identify equipment faults before failures occur. She explained that predictive maintenance uses real-time data, machine learning and sensor-based monitoring, allowing engineers to assess equipment conditions and anticipate faults. The technology has reduced forced outages and lowered maintenance costs. Adighije said AI is particularly useful in monitoring gas-fired turbines, enabling operators to track turbine performance, fuel efficiency, vibration, temperature and component wear through advanced digital systems. She added that the innovation has improved plant availability and increased electricity generation efficiency nationwide, strengthening electricity supply reliability. She listed inadequate generation, transmission limitations, technical losses and grid instability among sector challenges that AI, automation and digital analytics will increasingly help solve.
