The narrative is splitting: Sam Altman says AI companies are hiring m…

In early June 2026, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman stated that “the companies that I know that have adopted AI the most are also the ones hiring the most,” while companies citing AI for layoffs are often “adopting AI the least” and using it as cover for planned cuts. The labor market is splitting into two lanes: companies integrating AI deeply, creating roles for prompt engineers, AI trainers, and entry-level workers; and companies using AI to justify headcount reductions without meaningful adoption. BCG’s 2026 workforce analysis estimates that “50 to 55 percent of U.S. jobs will be reshaped by AI,” not eliminated. For entry-level workers, roles are being redefined rather than removed, requiring skills in AI tools, judgment, and creativity. Graduates must identify which lane a company belongs to.
