Databricks has acquired Electric, the developer of PGLite and the Electric Sync Engine, to bring distributed state and real-time data synchronization between teams of agents, extending its Postgres capabilities from the lakehouse to the edge. PGLite gives each agent its own lightweight Postgres for ultra-low latency access to local context, while Electric’s sync engine synchronizes distributed state back to a central Lakebase. Electric was started in September 2021 by CEO James Arthur, with co-founders CTO Valter Balegas, CPO Kyle Matthews, and Chief Data Office Sam Willis. The company has raised $7 million in funding from 18 angel investors and 5 VCs: Spark Capital, Lunar Ventures, StepFunction, Firestreak and Ninja Capital. PGlite, a Web Assembly version of Postgres, began as a proof of concept by Neon co-founder Stas Kelvich and has grown from 1 million to 13 million weekly downloads in the last 12 months. Electric also developed three open-source products: Electric Agents, Electric Streams, and Electric Sync. Databricks bought Neon in May last year in a $1bn deal, with Ali Ghodsi, Co-Founder and CEO at Databricks, saying it would give developers a serverless Postgres for agentic speed. It then added a Lakebase Postgres database layer to its lakehouse in June last year.
