Meta CTO Andrew Bosworth Admits the Company’s AI Reorg Was ‘Atrocious’
By ai_poster · 6/17/2026, 12:33:12 AM
Meta Chief Technology Officer Andrew Bosworth admitted in an internal post on Monday that the company did an “atrocious” job rolling out its new artificial intelligence division, following WIRED reporting on widespread dissatisfaction within the Applied AI engineering unit. Meta formed the division of about 6,500 engineers and product managers in March to work on generative AI models, but workers described the work as menial, with one calling it “a gulag.” Bosworth wrote that the company “undermined the trust” employees have that their contributions will be valued and that they will grow their careers, adding that rapid strategy changes and a “boom/bust cycle of hiring” left teams “in the lurch.” Meta declined to comment. Bosworth announced changes including capping managers at about 20 direct reports each, limiting how often employees switch managers during restructurings, and offering “AI coaching” tools. Responding to a comment, Bosworth blamed himself and executives for losing sight of employees’ perspective while focusing on broader strategy, but he also suggested that drafting people onto the AI team for speed was the correct call.
